Discarding the myths of innovation

Discarding the myths of innovation

It is rightly believed that innovation is a cornerstone of any successful and progressive business. It allows business to keep up the pace with ever-changing business environment and develop its staff to become versatile and flexible. It encourages new bold ideas that can lead to a breakthrough in the industry.

However, it is covered with myths and misconceptions, which drive a lot of organisations away from embracing the concepts of innovation and creativity.

Perhaps, the most common mistake a lot of businesses make is to assume that innovation entails risks and high-level expenses. They immediately dismiss such an idea and proceed on with stagnation and conservative approach. They reject the notion that operating a business itself is a risk and stagnation is only going to maximise expenses in the long run, as opposed to innovation. Innovation doesn’t need to be risky or expensive anyway, and is more akin to progress and positive working environment, than to anything else. Both these terms are nothing but great things for businesses.

Second popular myth (which can sometimes serve as an excuse) is that innovation is only applicable to big companies and not small or medium businesses. This is regrettable, as this misconception often leads to smaller companies completely ignoring any kind of progressive thinking and fail to grow and develop. Failure to understand the basics of innovation forces owners to adapt “living to work” instead of “working to live” attitude. They simply can’t expand and grow their business, which means they can’t afford to hire enough personnel to replace themselves. This vicious cycle can be observed time and time again when inspecting smaller businesses.

It is important to realise that innovation is not a business deal that might destroy your business or win you millions. It is not an investment or a gamble. It is what it says on the label – innovation. You can be as creative at your workplace as you feel comfortable. Just…be.
