GDPR – General Data Protection Regulation

What is GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation)?

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) (Regulation (EU) 2016/679) is a regulation by which the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union, and the European Commission intend to strengthen and unify data protection for all individuals within the European Union (EU). It creates consistent data protection rules across Europe and applies to companies who are based in the EU and global companies who process personal data about individuals in the EU. The regulation comes into effect on the 25th May 2018.

How does GDPR affect you?

THE GDPR significantly increases the obligations and responsibilities for organisations and business to be fully transparent in how they collect, use and protect personal data. Organisations must be able to demonstrate accountability for their data processing activities.

You can read about the General Data Protection Regulation Here on the European Commission Portal. The Irish Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) has launched a GDPR-specific website www.GDPRandYou.ie with guidance and steps to help organisations become more aware of their enhanced rights and responsibilities under the General Data Protection Regulation and ensure that their preparations take account of all actions required to bring them into compliance with the new law
