Tool - Sticking Dots

Sticking dots is a simple group technique used to prioritise ideas. It is suited to the early stages of idea selection. Voting is performed using the sticking dots, adhesive circular bits of paper, and the idea that has received the greatest number of dots is considered to be of the greatest value.

Using ‘Sticking Dots’

Step 1: All ideas that are under consideration are listed on a whiteboard or large sheet of paper that is visible to all participants.

Step 2: Participants are divided into groups. Each group receives a predetermined number of sticking dots in a colour specific to that group.

Step 3: The members of each group discuss the ideas under consideration and decide the number of sticking dots that will be allocated to each. Once a decision has been reached, the sticking dots are placed on the whiteboard or paper containing the ideas.

Step 4: On the basis of this prioritisation exercise, a group discussion takes place regarding the top five ranked ideas. A decision is then made regarding their implementation.
