Force Field Analysis
Force field analysis is an idea assessment technique conducted within a group context. Participants identify two types of forces, those in favour of an idea, referred to as driving forces; and those against an idea, referred to as restraining forces. Usually, the impact or strength of the respective forces is represented visually. The approach is then used by the organisation in one of two ways; either to inform a decision regarding whether or not to proceed with an idea; or to increase its chances of success by strengthening the driving forces, or by neutralising the restraining forces. The primary advantages of the technique are that it allows a ‘big picture’ perspective on decisions and easy representation of the rationale behind a decision.
